The March 11, 2011 Government Affairs meeting featured State Demographer, Tom Gillaspy. Mr. Gillaspy presented a very interesting and compelling discussion about the changes in the Minnesota economy, demographic changes and "the new norm".
- The $5 billion state shortfall (reduced from $6.2 billion) was largely due to increased capital gains revenue which resulted from the December federal tax compromise.
- A convergence of an increase in Minnesota's 65+ population and lower birth rates will result in fewer younger workers
- In the next ten years replacement workers, due to retirements, in most occupations will outnumber growth of new jobs
- The old normal + the great recession + long run demographic change = The New Normal
